ARMOUR SQUARE PARK, Ill. — Thursday turned out to be a day for the Grinders to lay down and avoid.
The Red Line Go-Gos jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead midway through the third inning of both teams’ ASPL debut and never let up, putting five crooked numbers on the board en route to a 16-1 drubbing of the Chinatown Grinders.
Four Go-Gos tapped out four hits apiece in the game, led by Scott Reichard’s massive 4-for-6, two-homer, four-run, five-RBI game. Owen Schoenfeld went 4-for-5 with a homer, stolen base and four RBIs. Leigh Allan went 4-for-6 with two knocked in, and Ali White had a 4-for-6, three-RBI, three-double day.
The near-heart of the Red Line order (Nos. 4-7) combined to go 16-for-23 with 11 runs, 14 RBIs, three homers and three doubles.
Incredibly, the 21-hit Go-Gos attack was completely bypassed by leadoff hitter Janice Scurio (0-for-5, BB, K) and pitcher Mark Liptak (0-for-3, BB, K).
The first Red Line run came in courtesy of a crazy hop off of third base off the bat of White, scoring Schoenfeld. Chinatown should’ve known then, as early as the second inning, it was going to be a long night.
Larry Berleman wore the loss for the Grinders, and through absolute oversight, had no teammates available to bail him out of this rough outing. Berleman suffered 13 earned runs, and implored teammates Leonard Gore, Keelin Billue, Kim Contreras and John Gorlewski to use Friday’s off-day to throw bullpens, in the case of any future assaults.
Contreras had two of the four Grinders hits, and Gorlewski clobbered a homer to left for Chinatown’s only run.
With a lot of MVP competition, Reichard had to take the top prize with his incredible clubbing day.
While all five of the current ASPL teams were drafted to be evenly matched, Red Line and Chinatown measured as the league’s two strongest clubs. The competition had better hope it was an incredibly hot day from the middle of the Go-Gos order — or an atrocious debut on the chilly South Side on Thursday night — if parity is to rule as designed.
